It’s been 20 years ago, the search engine Google was started. 20 Years ago on this day 27th September 1998, the search engine Google was started officially. 

Now we are in the stage where Google became the one of the necessary need for our life. Without Google we can't imagine, people are waking up to search on google. 

The most widely used search engine Google founded by Mr Larry Page and Mr Sergey Brin.

At first, it began in 1996 as a research project titled "The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine" given for PhD students Page and Brin at Stanford University.  

The basic concept of the research project is to find the web pages which link to the given web page based on the number of links the ranking for the page should provide.

Larry was focused on the algorithm to find the web pages which links to the given webpage. He wrote the program called crawler to find the backlinks of the given webpage.

But for Larry, it was quite challenging to find the nature of such backlinks as valuable information for that page. At that time, Sergey Brin joined with Larry in the project and, they named the project as BackRub. 

Larry wrote the program to find the number of backlinks to the given webpage and Sergey wrote an algorithm for the page rank. 

At first, Backrub was used on the Stanford University's website, with the domain google.stanford.edu. Larry and brin wished to change the name as googol which is the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, they choose this name because the name should refer the search engine was designed to provide a large amount of information. But, While trying to register the name googol was misspelled as google. 

The name Google was registered on September 15, 1997, and the company was incorporated on September 4, 1998. 

The world's No 1 Search engine company Google was first started in a garage of a friend Susan Wojcicki. Before incorporating the Co-Founder of Sun Microsystem, Andy Bechtolsheim funded $100,000 for Google on August 1998.

Google hired Craig Silverstein- PhD student at Stanford University, as a first employee of the company. And the company was run with six employees. Google became one of the top 100 websites of the year 1998 which was released by the PC Magazine. 

In 1999, Page and Brin decided to sell Google to Excite for $1 million. But the CEO of Excite George Bell refused it.

In March 1999, Google was shifted from the garage to the silicon valley. Within a year after the company started Google gave results for more than 3.5 million searches. 

And From 2000 Google decided to generate revenue from the selling the keyword advertisements on the web pages. But in the beginning, Larry was opposed to this after that he accepted. To keep the exact page design, advertisements were totally as text-based. 

In 2001, Google received a patent for its PageRank mechanism. The patent was officially assigned to Stanford University and lists Page as the inventor.

In 2002 Yahoo decided to buy Google for $3 billion but Larry and Sergey fixed the price as $5 billion. But Yahoo does not ready to buy Google for $5million. 

In 2003, the company leased a complex from Silicon Graphics, it became named as Googleplex. Three years later the company bought the property form SIG for $319 million.

In 2004, Google entered into the share market with 19,605,052 shares at a price of $85 per share. The sale of $1.67 billion gave Google a market capitalization of more than $23billion. At that time Google has 271 million shares under its control because of this many of the Google employees were became paper millionaires. And the Yahoo became the competitor of Google.

In 2005, Google Maps, Google Earth, and iGoogle were released. And Google bought a company called which makes the operating system for digital cameras.  


On 15 June 2006, A new verb "to google" was officially added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Oxford English Dictionary. And Google purchased YouTube for $1.65 billion.


In 2008, Google introduced Google Chrome, a web browser that integrated with the Google web services. 

In 2015, Google introduced the logo G. The G refers the Google. For this move, the Google employees play a vital role.


In 2018, Google has celebrating the successful 20th year. To celebrate this Google has designed a Google doodle video which is quite interesting. This video will get you into the first Google office which is set up by Larry and Sergey in the garage. The video will take to the street view.
